How are participatory research methods used to enhance the quality and acceptance of the CHE University Ranking? What are the challenges of interdisciplinary social research? CHE and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center present answers to these questions in a webinar on 29 October.

Participatory research methods – the focus of the lecture by Saskia Ulrich and Cort-Denis Hachmeister from CHE – give the individuals and institutions under study the opportunity to participate in the research or the method development. CHE uses a variety of such methods to develop the CHE University Ranking, in a bid to not only to secure the quality of the ranking and the accuracy of fit of the indicators involved, but also to increase willingness to participate and acceptance among higher education institutions (HEIs). This approach includes, for example, central coordinators’ advisory committees, advisory committees with representatives from the subjects under study, and intensive two-way communication with the participating HEIs and departments. This is the only way to ensure the high active participation of HEIs (90%) and departments (around 70%).

In the second part of the webinar, Hendrik Woiwode from the WZB Berlin Social Science Center will address the challenges of interdisciplinary research. According to his findings, monodisciplinary deep structures inhibit the implementation of interdisciplinary research. During the lecture, Woiwode will explain how scholars deal with these obstacles, and how they can be overcome.

The webinar will take place between 10.00 and 11.20 on 29 October 2020. You can register here. Tickets are available at the price of €5. The webinar will take place via Zoom within the “Online Summit” series of the EAIR – The European Higher Education Society. It will be held in English.
